Quality management

Excellent quality management is Swiss Medical Network's top priority. Our patients and our registered doctors are at the centre of our concerns.

Swiss Medical Network applies a structured quality management organisation in the three language regions in order to maintain this high understanding of quality. At the same time, clinics and medical centres enjoy autonomy and participation in all quality management processes within Swiss Medical Network.

Quality policy

Our quality management is organised according to Deming's PDCA cycle (Plan, Do, Check, Act). This simple method enables us to continually improve our day-to-day actions.

Customer satisfaction, integration into care, patient safety, professionalism, quality of care and indications, and sustainable development are at the heart of this approach.

Customer satisfaction

Customer satisfaction is our primary concern.
That's why we continually carry out customer satisfaction assessments throughout our organisation, both internally and externally.

  • Internal patient satisfaction: after each hospital stay, our patients have the opportunity to complete our internal satisfaction questionnaire. Thanks to the direct feedback we receive from our patients, we are able to make continuous improvements in real time.
  • External patient satisfaction with ANQ
  • External patient satisfaction with Mecon: some of our clinics also carry out other patient satisfaction surveys, for example with Mecon.

In our various clinics, individual evaluations are also carried out. For example, satisfaction surveys are carried out among staff and registered doctors.

Integration into care

The autonomy of our patients is of paramount importance to us and contributes to rapid recovery. That's why our patients are actively involved in their own care. 
In the Jura Arc region, Swiss Medical Network is currently working
with its partners - the canton of Berne and the health insurer Visana - a reorientation of the healthcare system that is unique in Switzerland, with an emphasis on integrated care.

Patient safety

Safe surgery checklist

In all our clinics, we use the checklist for safe surgery, which complies with WHO international standards. This checklist enables us to put in place a safety mechanism that, among other things, checks the completeness of prior examinations or rules out any patient confusion. Regular checks in our clinics ensure that the checklist is implemented consistently and correctly.

CIRS

Thanks to the CIRS system (Critical Incident Reported System), Swiss Medical Network can constantly evaluate near misses and learn from them in order to avoid them in the future. CIRS is an anonymous tool that is available to all Swiss Medical Network employees and doctors. The clinics manage the CIRS tool independently.  Particularly instructive cases and lessons learned are communicated to the entire group.

Patient identification

We want to make the treatment of our patients even safer with identification bracelets or patient wristbands. Our doctors and nursing staff in the wards, operating theatres and various examination units need to be able to identify our patients securely and unambiguously at all times.

Professionalism

Our employees work on the basis of evidence. This means that their activities are based on the latest scientific knowledge. To ensure that this is the case, our employees receive ongoing internal and external training.
 We set the same standards for our registered doctors. That's why we carefully select our registered doctors.

Quality of indications and results

We also focus on the quality of indications and results. Specific measures within this framework enable us to constantly monitor the appropriateness, necessity and outcome of our medical indications. PROM (Patient Reported Outcome Measures), tumour boards & indications boards, and mortality & morbidity conferences are just some of the ways in which we strive to comply with «Best Practice».

Sustainable development

We are aware that our resources are limited. That's why we are focusing on sustainability throughout Swiss Medical Network. We focus on the goals and strategies we have set ourselves in a sustainable way. We focus on processes and results. We use a number of tools to achieve this, such as an integrated management system and a risk map.


 In the long term, we want to reduce our carbon footprint and make a positive contribution to preserving an intact environment. We use our resources responsibly to ensure the consistently high quality of the care and services we provide.

SIRIS - Swiss Implant Register

Based on the national quality contract between ANQ and the member hospitals, SIRIS (Swiss Implant Registry for Hip and Knee Prostheses) was introduced in 2012 and for spinal prostheses in 2021. Ziel dieser Erfassung ist die bestmögliche Versorgung der Patienten sowie die Beurteilung der langfristigen Implantat- und Behandlungsqualität. Die daraus gewonnenen Ergebnisse erlauben zudem einen Qualitätsvergleich mit anderen Spitälern.

ISO 9001:2015 – Swiss Safety Center (SSC)

Some of our clinics are certified according to this standard, which is widely used and comparable both nationally and internationally. It shows the requirements that have to be implemented with regard to customer needs as well as product and service quality. The standard is thus a proven instrument for increasing the transparency of operational processes and subsequently optimising the efficiency of corporate performance. The annual review by the certification body SSC also ensures continuous and sustainable improvement of the management system.

ANQ

National Association for Quality Development

ANQ's mandate is to define relevant quality indicators, to conduct quality measurements to provide the national comparison and to communicate the measurement results transparently.

The Swiss Medical Network institutions take part in the ANQ surveys every year. The results enable the institutions to compare themselves with hospitals and clinics nationwide and to take targeted measures to improve the patient experience.

Swissnoso

Swissnoso is dedicated to reducing nosocomial infections and multidrug-resistant germs that can occur during a stay or treatment in a hospital. Practicable modules are offered in the area of surveillance and prevention. The Swiss Medical Network institutions continuously monitor possible cases of infection or the long-term course of wound healing and report these to Swissnoso. Useful data for quality control is generated and evaluated from this.

Swiss Leading Hospitals (SLH)

As a member clinic, we are committed to the highest quality standards in all areas of the clinic. Compliance with these standards is checked every two years by a neutral certification body and ensures that our above-average performance is maintained in the medium and long term. A combination of performance and development criteria encourages continuous improvement, thereby strengthening our role in quality assurance in the Swiss hospital landscape. The result is tangible quality for our patients, which can carry the «BEST IN CLASS» label.

Organisation

Swiss Medical Network's quality management has organised itself in such a way that it can react quickly to changes in the healthcare system in order to go beyond national or cantonal requirements.

Swiss Medical Network's quality management reports to the Extended Executive Board. Two people organise quality management in collaboration with the Secretary General Medical Affairs. In addition, regional managers are available for each region, which enables process- and result-oriented work.
